Chapter 5 : Reunion

Finally I get to update.. phew. I draw little by little between works and finally can make one strip. Yay!
The above strip in celebrating Mother's Day since it's getting closer to Mother's Day in Indonesia (22 Dec).

Racial Hierarchy in Spanish Colonial Era Philippines

During the Spanish colonial period from the 16th to the 19th century, the racial mixture in the Philippines occurred on a quite smaller scale as compared to the other Spanish territories. A caste system, like that used in the Spanish America, existed in the Philippines, with some explicit differences. The racial hierarchy in Philippines is explained starting from the highest rank group having maximum power and authority and ending with the group having lowest or zero rights, power and authority.
  • Peninsulares – The highest level of the racial hierarchy in Philippines is composed by Peninsulares class. These were the person of pure Spanish descent born in Spain. These people possessed maximum command and influence over the Philippine.
  • Americano – Persons of pure Spanish descent living in the Philippines who were born in Spanish America were classified as ‘Americano’. This was the second highest level of the hierarchy.
  • Filipino / Insulares – The next rank in the Philippines racial hierarchy is the Filipino. Basically, the Philippine-born children of ‘Americano’ were classified as ‘Filipinos’.
  • Tornatras – These were the persons of mixed indigenous Spanish ancestry (referred to as Filipino or Peninsular), Chinese (referred to as Sangley), and Malay (referred to as Indio). Most people of the Tornatras caste in the Philippines used Spanish as their primary language and in many cases converted to the Catholic faith.
  • Mestizos de Espanola – The next in the hierarchy is the class Mestizos de Espanola, subordinate to the Tornatras. This term was used to describe people of mixed Filipino and foreign ancestry.
  • Sangley – This is a level used in hierarchy to demonstrate the persons of pure Chinese ancestry, while Mestizos de Sangley was used to refer to a person of mixed Chinese and indigenous ancestry
  • Indio – Indio was the term that was used to refer the native Malays, but if we consider the legal classification, this term was only used to refer the Christianized Malays who lived in closeness to the Spanish colonies. This was the second lowest rank in the hierarchy.
  • Negrito – The lowest level in the Philippines racial hierarchy was of the Negritos. This group represented the black Negro people who possessed minimal or zero rights and worked as labors in the Spanish colonial system.

This is the cutest chapter ever! I love her mom!
Lovely Shoujo Emoji (Huggy Hug) [V2] Tight Hug Love
My dad's actually from an indio family, but my mom's from a mistizo-sangley family. My mom told me that some of my family members fled to Mindanao when the Americans arrived, and my great grandfather called them cowards. I found it funny because of how my mom told it. I think the reason for it was because of being affiliated with the Spaniards.

My mom's side of the family is pretty hilarious. She'd tell me weird stories even about her siblings. We were one of the wealthiest in Bicol. However, her life wasn't much of a luxury compared to her ancestors. She had to do all the chores in the house while her brothers were out with their friends and two sisters in their room all day. And there were like what, seven of them? The katipuneros didn't liked my family. But I think I could recall a relative from Bicol that a lot of people liked back then. He had this large jar filled with coins that he let anybody take from.

Anyway, enough with my family. How are you doing lately? I haven't talked to you in a while. I'm currently in PT week, or what the students in my school call hell week. It's when projects and presentation dates are all cramed under one or two weeks. Craming is very common and they are worth 30% of our grades. Which is both a bad thing and a good thing. It could save you or fail you. By the way, have you read some of the updates?

Aaawwwww, this is just the most beautiful page I've ever seen n v n
Isabella's really lucky to have a mother like her, not deepising her for her status and her color skin ; v ; especially since this is the first intro/page of chapter 5 yehey !!
Sigh, welcome to my world Isabella, where instead of having fun in parties their just gossiping and back stabbing people either from having quite a dark skin or how antisocial their only child is.

It's quite sad how the Spanish have to put a racial caste system here in the Philippines. Now most of the Filipinos have a colonial mentality, even me... well back then when I was still in the 6th grade. It's really hard to say to my friends and family that they have a really, really bad case of colonial mentality since they won't believe me u.u
But! All I can say is that, aaaaaaawwwwww, Isabella will always be a perfect, adorable, sweet(okay I'm going too far) angel to her mother > w <

Yes, Isabella's mom is a compassionate person.

I agree, the self hate due to skin color is very damaging to young generations.

You're welcome!

Isabella's mother is also a kind mother <3
Yeah, it's quite sad. I thought that once the independence of my homeland would have a new start, where all the things the Spanish had done would be recovered and also as being equal not by the status of your skin color, and also where all the cultures of our ancestors can be restored, buuut I was wrong. I forgot that the Philippines have been colonized for more than 300 years.
Almost every generations and the generation right now have a colonial mentality from our appearances.

Despair not, there is hope, like Bonifacio said "May pag asa".

Every country has problem as well, I'm sure Philippines can overcome her obstacles as well with bright young generations like you, Misaikoneho. ^^

Yeah u.u I know that. There is still hope for my homeland. I've been living here for my whole life! Unlike my other relatives, who goes to abroad and live there, which saddens my grandmother that is.
I guess no country is perfect.
I'll try my best to be a Filipino(though we weren't suppose to be called Filipinos back then XD)^^
I'm actually discussing with some of my friends about the history of the Philippines especially the Prehistoric Philippines ^^ I'm really glad that I found out about it(and get rid of my colonial mentality kesesese).
