Unfortunately that night, there is no Isagani to defuse the lamp bomb...

I decided to have Philippines Governor General
Antonio Moltó (April 25, 1888-June 4, 1888) to be Simoun (aka Kan-Laon) victim since there isn't much info about him and especially since he held the office after Governor General Emilio Terrero y Perinat

If anybody wondering why Simoun (aka Kan-Laon) cut short his hair in 1888, please look it up on Precolonial Visayas symbolism (importance) of hair cut. Unfortunately I cannot spoil it here due to future
story line spoilers.

Many thanks to :iconmuchiepotatoes: :iconaquariussincebirth: for translations in Ilonggo-Hiligaynon. Much appreciate your kind assistance :D

Jose Rizal's El-Fili : Simoun Lamp Bomb

In "El Filibusterismo" (Chapters 34-35), Simoun brought along a lamp in the wedding reception of Juanito Pelaez and Paulita Gomez. It is his gift to the newly weds and it has an explosive liquid compound known as "Nitroglycerin" in it. The reception takes place at the former home of the late Captain Tiago, which was filled with other explosives planted by Simoun. According to Simoun, the lamp will stay lighted for only 20 minutes before it flickers; if someone attempts to turn the wick, it will explode and kill everyone inside the house-mostly the important members of civil society and the Church hierarchy.  The explosion will be the signal to start a revolt in Manila.

When I saw Kan-Laon in the first panel, I squealed; then I realized "What's he doing there?"; and then when I saw the lamp, I screamed.

First of all, KUDOS TO ISABELLA'S MOM <3 I don't think she considers being "kayumanggi" or being "indio" as a bad thing as she is able to love Isabella, someone who is from the "indio class", unconditionally. I think she's the one who influenced Isabella to pursue pre-colonial studies, or supported Isabella in her passion to study pre-colonial studies. I don't see Isabella's father giving support for Isabella without Donya Pia's influence... It's so sad she died early...but why would Isabella's foster father, Don Kapitan Damaso, would regret adopting Isabella if Isabella isn't really the primary cause of Donya Pia's death?

Second, KAN-LAON, WHYYYY? :iconnooooplz: Was he even aware that his fellow Naga could've also died in the explosion TT^TT ? This also raises questions why Ilyas was able to tolerate this (or could he have known? If Ilyas was the same age as Isabella's, then he wouldn't have known that Kan-Laon had done this) and how he was able to pull this off. I mean, if the lamp has an explosive compound of nitroglycerin, where did he get it? and How was he admitted inside the party? (and how can he not be noticed by other people given his hair color and tattoos? XD Probably he has some kind of magic cloaking his true appearance...)

Third, Kan-laon's hair, hmmm... According to this article , Visayans cut their hair only when they are being punished or they are in mourning. In the flashbacks (while he was imprisoned and while he was telling a story to Ilyas), Kan-laon's hair was still long and well-maintained, meaning it was not cut or tampered in any way. So, I presume that he had cut his hair after these events, most likely because of mourning? He must've lost a relative, which I assume is a Naga belonging to Visayas, who he just found out had died under the hands of the Spaniards, so he decided to reenact revenge through killing the Governor-General?

Fourth, Kan-laon's ancestry...hmmm...He must be related to Ulilang Kaluluwa in some way... Probably he descended from his line? Also, since it is heavily hinted that Kan-laon belonged to the Kedatuan of Mad-yas, he must probably be part of the Suludnon people, who have the memories of the god Sidapa preserved in their folklore. Following this, the mountain Kan-laon is guarding must be Mt. Madias, which is known for the god Sidapa making marks on the tallest tree on the said mountain to keep tally of the people being born into this world.

Fifth, would Ankar help Kan-laon or flee? Ever since the discovery of the KKK, Manila has been heavily guarded. It will not be easy for the Nagaraja team to escape (unscathed).

I'm a little worried what Isabella's reaction will be when he finds out that it is Kan-Laon who killed her mother. But then again, it doesn't seem that Kan-Laon knows that Isabella was there. Otherwise, he wouldn't put that lamp there, wouldn't he? I mean, Isabella is a Naga and Nagas have to stick together, right?

I really love the pacing of this story; not too quick, not too slow. :iconshaplz: I shall be waiting for the future updates :3

I love how you acknowledge the El-Fili references. I love that novel X333

Yes, Isabella's mom is a very compassionate person. She is the one who support Isai (Isabella's nickname) in Precolonial study, there will be a backstory to it. Damaso has his own reason to blame Isai for the tragedy, there will be more to it as well. It's unfortunate for him to lose both his wife and one of his manor due to lamp bomb.

Ilyas wasn't aware of it at first, but he did find out when he get older. His reaction.. more will be revealed in later chapters XDDD
Kan-laon is a jeweller, just like Simoun, so he obtained nitroglycerin through black market (for a price). As for his hair and tattoos, well it's Kan-Laon, he has his way.

For the third you got them almost right ^^ but also because of Ilyas.

Kedatuan of Madyas territory are including Negros Occidental and the whole Panay Island. There were two Nagas in Kedatuan Madyas. Kanlaon is the Naga for Negros Island only. For the other Naga you guess right with the God Sidapa and the tallest tree in Mt. Madias.

Yes, Kan-Laon was not aware of Isabella's presence since she was very little and hasn't develop any Naga power.

My heart almost leaped from my chest when I saw that El-Fili reference. Unfortunately, there was no Basilio to remove the dumb TT^TT (tho I have been rooting for the bomb to work in El Filibusterismo)

True...I also imagine it being a huge blow not only to his family, but also to indios at the time. The Spanish are already very paranoid due to KKK and other foreign attacks.

I see XD Well, since Kan-laon is from Kedatuan of Madyas, I think he has enough riches to become a jeweler. Spaniards would be delighted with the hand craft pre-colonial goods.

Oh, I see. Hmm, so that could mean that Nagas only sense other Nagas when they are aware of their power? (but given with the aid of magical items, they could sense Nagas who haven't been aware of their power as of yet?)

Actually it was Isagani who defuse the lamp bomb XDDD he still loves Paulita and despite how she dump him for another guy, Isagani doesn't want Paulita to be caught up in the bomb explosion.

Yes, it brought bad name to Indios in general. With the gov-general caught in the bomb (in this story, not in RL).

Yes to precolonial goods. This will give clue to Isabella pertaining his origin.

Naga can only detect other Naga when the Naga release their batin (spiritual) power by high emotion, fighting by using magic, etc, you know the usual shounen stuff. Other than that, they need very special items to identify Naga (which is very rare).

Jesus! I finally caught up. QwQ)..... ahh... my poor heart.....Isabella is soo cute when she's little. I wonder how will Kan-laon would react if he knows Isay was Gen. Molto's adopted daughter. When I was still in highschool, Noli and Feli was taugt in our 9th grade filipino subject. I only have few recollections about it but all I remember was the bomb, Maria Clara's death, and something about someone in the characters got raped and committed suicide(I hope I'm correct). The novels were heart breaking and truly did reflect the Philippines wayback it's colonial era(probably the reason why I didn't have the heart to read it anymore. The feels are hunting.) It's like we were colonized but abandoned. Ouch.

Anyways amazing update! ^w^ I hope you keep on updating more! Sensei!!!!FIghting!!!/^o^)/

Hi Aquesse, it's been a while ^^ how have you been? I hope you are doing well.

Ah it seems there is a misunderstanding XDD Isai is not the governor general adopted daughter, but Kapitan Damaso adopted daughter. Kapitan Damaso, just like Kapitan Tiago from Noli is very close to the Spanish colonial government. He held a party at his manor in which the current gov general attend as well.

Agreed, El Fili is downright depressing. But still awesome, my favorite is Simoun X333

Thank you Aquesse ^^

The Naga legend id in a storybook form in our library, the simple version for the kids. Must have been Very happy hungry.

Everyone inside the house are mostly the important members of civil society and the Church hierarchy, as well as the colonial Governor General himself. Thus for Kan-Laon/Simoun they all are fair target.

Kan-laon wasnt aware of Isabella existance when she is a little girl unfortunately. He only recently know about Isavpbella due to her transform into bakubawa.

I think the fault lies on me if the storyline is confusing, forgive me, I will try to improve ^^

Unfortunately short hair for precolonial Visayas has other meanings, thus the reason why Laon cut his hair short.

When you watch Durarara, every episode would have a narration and one of the narration would be
"It might seemed everybody's fate are not related but actually it does, their fates are tied with each other in some way or another" or something like that.
