Description

Brunei & Philippines relations, all the way from 13th century to now.

=> Vijayapura & Sulu

In the seventh century, Chinese and Arab accounts state a place called Vijayapura(Brunei), which was thought to be founded by members of the royal family of Funan.[16] They were believed to have landed on the northwest coast of Borneo with some of their followers. They then captured P’o-li and renamed the territory ‘Vijayapura’ (meaning ‘victory’). In 977, Chinese records started to use Po-ni instead of Vijayapura to refer to Brunei.[17] In 1225 a Chinese official named Chua Ju-Kua reported that Brunei has 100 warships to protect its trade and that there was a lot of gold in the kingdom.[18] Another report in 1280 described Po-ni as controlling large parts of Borneo Island (modern day Sabah and Sarawak, Sulu and some parts of the Philippines. In the fourteenth century, Po-ni became a vassal state of Majapahit(Indonesia), and had to pay an annual payment of 40 katis of camphor. Po-ni(Brunei) was attacked and looted of its treasure and gold by the Sulus(Philippines) in 1369. A fleet from Majapahit(Indonesia) succeeded in driving away the Sulus(Philippines) but Po-ni(Brunei) became much weaker after the attack.[19] A Chinese report of 1371 described Po-ni as poor and totally controlled by Majapahit.[20] The power of the Sultanate of Brunei was at its peak between the 15th and 17th centuries, with its power extending from northern Borneo to the southern Philippines.[4] Source :[link]

=> Po-ni & Tondo

Tondo, (also referred to as Tundo, Tundun, Tundok, Lusung) was a Philippine fortified kingdom which was located in the Manila Bay area, specifically north of the Pasig river, on Luzon island. Tondo initiated diplomatic ties with China during the Ming Dynasty, and thus became a dominant force in trade throughout Southeast Asia and East Asia. (See Luções). Its regional prominence in trade and alliance with Brunei's Sultan Bolkiah in 1500 led to its peak age as a thalassocratic force in the northern archipelago.

Tondo became so prosperous that around the year 1500 AD, the Kingdom of Brunei under Sultan Bolkiah merged it by a royal marriage of Gat Lontok, who later became Rajah of Namayan, and Dayang Kaylangitan to establish a city with the Malay name of Selurong (later to become the city of Maynila)[11][12] on the opposite bank of Pasig River. The traditional rulers of Tondo, the Lakandula, retained their titles and property but the real political power transferred to the House of Soliman, the Rajahs of Manila.[13] Source :[link]

=> Brunei Darussalaam & Philippines

In April 2009, Brunei and The Philippines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that seeks to strengthen the bilateral cooperation of the two countries in the fields of agriculture and farm-related trade and investments.[1] The MOU further strengthened bilateral cooperation between the two Southeast Asian countries, particularly in the fields of agriculture and farm-related trade and investments.[2] The two countries have agreed to cooperate in plant science, crops technology, vegetable and fruit preservation, biotechnology, post-harvest technology, livestock, organic agriculture, irrigation and water resources and Halal industry.[3] Source :[link]

=> World's Largest Palace was designed by Filipino architect : Istana Nurul Iman, Brunei Darussalam

The Istana Nurul Iman palace is the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, and the seat of the Brunei government. It was designed by Filipino architect Leandro V. Locsin, who utilized the architectural motif of golden domes and vaulted roofs to echo Brunei's Islamic and Malay influences. The interior of the palace was designed by Khuan Chew, Design Principal of KCA International, whose other works include the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. Construction was handled by Ayala International, a Filipino construction firm, and completed in 1984 at a total cost of around $1.4 Billion USD. Upon completion, Istana Nurul Iman, became the largest residential palace in the world and the largest single family residence ever built.[1] Source :[link]
