Timor Leste to join ASEAN 4 by dinosaurusgede Timor Leste to join ASEAN 4 by dinosaurusgede

Sorry, I changed the tittle because... I don't have enough material to focus on PNG. Thus, I will be focusing more on Timor Leste and ASEAN. ^^;

=> Timur Lorosae

The name Timor derives from "timur", which means east in Indonesian and Malay and had become Timor in Portuguese.

The Portuguese name Timor-Leste and the unofficial Tetum name Timor Lorosae are sometimes used in English, and the United Nations officially calls it Timor-Leste.

"Lorosae", the word for east in Tetum language, literally means the rising sun.

=> Bahasa Tetun (Tetum Language)

Tetum (also Tetun) is an Austronesian language spoken on the island of Timor. It is spoken in Belu Regency in Indonesian West Timor, and across the border in East Timor, where it is one of the two official languages. Source :[link] [link]

=> Amanuban Kingdom of West Timor

Amanuban was a traditional princedom in West Timor, Indonesia. It lay in the regency (kabupaten) Timor Tengah Selatan. In the late colonial period, according to an estimate in 1930, Amanuban covered 2,075 square kilometers.[1] The centre of the princedom since the nineteenth century was Niki-Niki. The population belongs to the Atoni group. Today they are predominantly Protestants, with a significant Catholic minority and some Muslims.

=> Indonesia Should Help Timor Leste Prosper

"East Timor is our neighbor and, likewise, we have to work together as good neighbors,” Tene said. “And, there are many occasions in which the interests of Indonesia and East Timor's are in line."

But it was only in the last decade that the relationship between these neighbors turned positive. Prior to that, East Timor was not a country but a province of Indonesia. In 1975, during the rule of military strongman President Suharto, the Indonesian military took control of the former Portuguese colony and occupied it for 24 years. In 1999, after the fall of Suharto, Indonesia allowed the East Timor people to vote for independence. The United Nations-backed referendum passed overwhelmingly, but Indonesian-backed militias responded by ransacking the country and killing an estimated 1,400 people.

In 1999, Dewi Fortuna Anwar was the spokesperson for then-president of Indonesia B.J. Habibie, who supported East Timor's independence. Today, she is the research director at the Habibie Center think tank. She says that as East Timor - or Timor Leste - was transitioning to an independent country, Indonesia was transitioning to a democracy and, by 2002, relations between the countries were on the mend.

"Immediately after the transfer of power from the United Nations to Timor Leste, the Indonesian president, President Megawati attended the celebration in East Timor and the process of reconciliation really started from its earliest stage in 2002,” Anwar said. “And, from that time onward, both Jakarta and Dili have worked very hard to put the history behind us."

The two countries participate in an ongoing Commission on Truth and Friendship that is charged with investigating past atrocities, although some human rights groups say the commission's powers to investigate and prosecute are too limited.

"Indonesia does not want to see East Timor to continue to lag behind, because a weak East Timor would continue to be a weak underbelly for Indonesia's overall security,” Anwar added. “So it is in Indonesia's best interest to see that East Timor succeeds to become a new state and to become a center for prosperity, so that, when it engages with the outside world, it will not be to the detriment of its bigger neighbor."

And, Indonesia knows that if ASEAN does not increase political and economic ties with East Timor, China and India will.

=> Indonesia Biggest Supporter of Timor Leste for ASEAN Membership

Indonesia is seen as the most enthusiastic proponent of allowing Timor-Leste membership in ASEAN. ([link])

Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told his Timor Leste counterpart José Luis Guterres on Tuesday that Indonesia would continue with its support for Timor Leste’s bid to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) despite Indonesia no longer holding the chair of the 10-nation group.

“We will continue to work hard to help realize Timor Leste’s vision to be a member of ASEAN,” Marty said during a joint press conference with Guterres following bilateral talks at the Indonesian Foreign Minister’s office.

The two ministers also agreed to boost cooperation between Indonesia and Timor Leste particularly in the economic sector, including trade and investment.

Why is Port always with a frown? He should be happy (or at east proud) =(

Random fact, although we usually call Timor Timor Leste, every now and then we also say Timor Lorosae, as the actual, proper name. I wasn't aware it actually had a translation

He's jealous I guess ^^;
Especially since after Timur Lorosae independence many Topasses (Portuguese descended) try to make Portuguese as the national language. Timur Lorosae (and Indonesia Nusa Tenggara Timur) cultural language are Tetun language and some of the view this as a threat to traditional culture. Plus there has been many protest about the preferation on people of Portuguese descedant to be in position on power by the opposition which culiminate in the coup in 2002.. it was pretty messy, many fled to West Timor (Indonesia). Thank God, the coup has died down but we still have probleem of taking care of Timur Lorosae refugees in Indonesia. Of course Portugal has nothing to do with this coup since Portugal himself is pretty busy with the recession going on and all.

There isn't any reason he should be. He's pretty proud about Timor finally becoming independent and able to stand on her own 2 feet
There were a lot of campaigns here to help reconstruct Timor and build schools and other facilities and volunteer work was well viewed (that is until Port hit another financial crisis and couldn't afford to help others much, but still)

Here when they announced Timor had chosen portuguese as her official language, Port was pleasantly surprised (I think he even cried a tear of gratitude, but he's too much of a "man" to show it =p). But I wasn't aware there was that conflict with the local language
I hope they can get to an understanding in the near future. The language part doesn't worry me, that will likely be easy to settle, but discrimination... that's a really hard thorn to deal with =(
