is my salad a sentient? by dinosaurusgede is my salad a sentient? by dinosaurusgede
Chp 48 of Less Wrong's HP fanfiction:
Harry Potter & The Methods of Rationality.[link]

HarryPotter & TerryBoot.

Harry making theories during breakfast about sentient/self-awareness possibility of snakes & other animals caused by spell that enable us to talk to animals(like parselmouth to snake or poultrymoth to cows?) which make him avoid eating meat for the time being.

Unfortunately he realized that if such spell to talk to animals exists, there's the possibility that there is a spell to talk to plants, giving plants self-awareness(becoming sentient)

you know, you did a remarkable job on Harry's facial expression there. That said, "Just eat the students, said Hufflepuff. There's no doubt about whether they're sentient." That is all.

So wouldn't a poultrymouth be able to talk to chickens, not cows?

Cows are not poultry, as you seem to imply in your description :P That might be called Bovinetongue. Poultrytongue would apply to chickens.

Anyway, great art! :)

that chapter made no sense. Parseltoungue isn't a spell, it's a genetic thing. And, plant have neither nrains nor mouths, so how can they talk to anybody let alone be sentient. If having a language makes you sentient, then dolphins are as sentient as they come! whales too! They have their own societies and their own languages that they understand! plus, if Harry was an evolutionist and doesn't believe in an afterlife, then why is he so worried about animals? If he believes in evolution, then he must believe in survival of the fittest. so even if they are sentient he should think that humans ARE superior till a stronger species comes around and becomes higher than us...

Sorry for posting this so late, just thought I should give my thoughts to the situation. Harry's morality is based on empathy and rational decisions. A world in which billions are working together is much better even for the individual than a world in which everyone's basically out for themselves and assigns no value to each other's lives or goals. He's stated he doesn't want anyone to die and that we should build a framework based on the physical laws as well as magic (if they're not the same thing) to make it so no one dies. Ever. The pattern of the mind is vastly more important than the physical matter making it up and if magic suddenly makes snakes grow signs of intelligence and what he refers to as 'sentience' where there were no signs of it before he must now assign value to their lives. He doesn't think of us as the human race, he thinks of us as all beings capable of rational thought and self-awareness who don't want to die. Survival of the fittest managed to create him from random chaos, but it certainly isn't optimal for his morality and now that he does exist he should try to improve things a bit. So the horror of untold numbers of potentially self-aware creatures dying and suffering all over made his brain go fzzt when he tried to model that. Kinda like Azkaban.

to support your argument about not being optimal here is hary's stated goal from and earlier chapter as he spoke to the man teaching battle magic at hogwarts
"To understand everything important there is to know about the universe, apply that knowledge to become omnipotent, and use that power to rewrite reality because I have some objections to the way it works now."

You have to remember that while Harry is supposed to be a rationalist in this story, and though he often says things that you'd have trouble believing a child could say, he is still 11 years old there. So he tries applying whatever bits of knowledge he has to magic and things related to it, and the results are often hilarious (or even hilariously wrong, sometimes) because hit attempts at explaining magic with science end with insanity (just like there, an adult person wouldn't come to a conclusion that random).

While not precisely what I believe the meaning to be, a quote from Optimus Prime is close enough: "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings."

More precise, it's not just "having a language", it's having a means of passing and compressing information. These sentient snakes don't just have a language similar to the sorta-language of Dolphins, but completely comprehend English and abstract thoughts English is capable of conveying that a primitive language can't. On compressing information, if I have a computer program that has a huge table of stored arithmetic outcomes (there's an entry for 2+2, 4+3, up to x+y=n where n is the largest 32-bit number), sure it does arithmetic, but it's a huge program and may also run slower depending on the system architecture. Meanwhile a 32-bit fast-adder implemented in pure logic is much faster and requires much less space, it is a "smarter" program, it compresses the information better. But it's only limited to information about adding two 32-bit numbers, whereas English is capable of so much more. Where this ends up is that it's not a good idea to kill or eat sufficiently sentient life, or programs that can carry and compress sufficient amounts of information.

Lastly, believing in evolution does not imply believing in survival of the fittest as a proper way of things, nor does it imply believing that death doesn't matter and that older life forms are somehow less valuable, less progressive, etc. Just because nature does something a certain way doesn't make it right or desirable. Humans are superior to other life forms since we're ultradominant, but in the case of lifeforms fully speaking and parsing English, that grants them at least equivalent intelligence to humans, so they are in fact not less sentient or less intelligent. Even if they were somewhat less, we still don't eat babies that can't arguably be called very intelligent.

And this is all moot anyway since the magic doesn't actually grant sentience, but feeds off the sentience of the wizard. xD

-the snakes don't understand english.
-how do you know babies aren't super geniuses filled to the brim with great ideas, and by the time they learn the language enough to describe it while also having people actually take their ideas and use them, they've already been forgotten.
-And of course we don't eat human babies! cause they're humans and we don't eat things of our species! "But that dear children is called cannibalism, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies." -Willy Wonka(Depp)

-Sorry, s/English/A language more or less directly translatable to and compatible with English/g. French, English, Japanese, and general-human-language are pretty much equivalent, if Parseltongue can translate directly (as it appears it can) then it's equivalent to English. If ants for example had a "language" that consisted of two scents that meant "leaf here" and "leaf not here", that wouldn't be a language directly translatable and compatible.
-I have no reason to believe that. Do you have any reason to? Do you have any reason to even postulate that as a consideration other than "Hey, it has an epsilon chance of being true, and epsilon > 0!"
-Yup. :) But I'd feel just as uncomfortable eating a human as I would, say, a chimp with human-level intelligence. Cannibalism is a driving factor for our resistance, but intelligence level, intelligence potential, and cuteness are too.

Also, I liked Gene Wilder more. :(
