Some Makassan captains had told the Yolngu in the previous year that they might not be able to visit them in the future because the balanda (white Europeans) would not let them. In 1979 Djawa, one of the most senior ceremonial leaders at Milingimbi (500 kilometers of East Darwin), told this story of when the Makassan came for the last time :
The last time he came, the Makassan man said, "Hey I'm finished with your place here ... I'm finished with this place because Marrig, they are making trouble for me. He always chase my boat. He tries to force me back to my own country. He makes trouble for me in this big land here", he said. Marrigi means Balanda; Balanda is Netherlands in Indonesia and Whitemen in Yolngu.
In his history of Arnhem Land by Richard Tudgen reports that Yolngu elders remembered their fathers' tears of disbelieve when the Makassans told them that they would not be returning again. From the Yolngu's perspective white officials has no right to interfere with their private matters. They said "Who are these Balanda?
