=> Memory of Makassans by The Aborigines

Writing in 1974, Lazarus Lamilami, a Maung elder from Goulburn Island (off the coast of Arnhem Land) who is also a Christian pastor, captured the bonds of friendship and commerce that tied the Makassans (Indonesia) and Aborigines closely together :

"...The Macassans were coming to our area for a very long time. Our people liked them, and when the ships came back at the time of the north-west wind, that we call bara, they would be happy to see them...
...When the boats were fishing the trepang, each one would have about ten Aborigines working for them and there would be about ten Macassans...
A lot of the people used to go down to... the Macassans and help them with tanning and bagging up the trepang. The Macassans would have a party before they left, to say goodbye... They would say they would see the Aborigines again the next year and ask them to collect turtle shells and buggalo horns, and they would promise to bring back presents.
The Aboriginal people were very friendly with the Macassans. They used to address them by Aboriginal words for brother or uncle or father. They were happy when the season came for them to come back. They liked to get the presents they brought."

The many instances of Aborigines visiting and working in Makassan camps indicate a high level of trust on both sides.
