Kindly please refrain from calling Inuit people "Eskimo". Please use the correct name "Inuit".

=> Inuit (Canada)

The people of the Canadian Arctic are known as the Inuit. They used to be called Eskimos, which came from a Native American word for 'eater of raw meat'. Now the Arctic people are officially known as the Inuit, which means 'the people', or singularly, Inuk, which means 'the person'.

Okay, so here are some common things that people say that are wrong:
Bullet; Red "Eskimo kissing" - When two people brush their eyes and nose against each other. This is appropriately called Kunik. It's a form of showing affection, not necessarily romantic, but with family too.
Bullet; Red Today there are modern houses, with all the kinds of household items you'd see anywhere else. While igloos are still used for fun, and for like, hunting trips, people don't live in them like they used to. Here is a nice picture of the inside of an igloo. They are actually very cozy.
Bullet; Red People often say the Inuit "slaughter helpless animals." There are many protests about the seal hunt especially. What people don't know is that it is a very big part of the culture and livelihood. The seal skin is water resistant and warm; perfect for clothes to survive the harsh weather. The boots from seal skin are absolutely gorgeous. My grandmother once gave me a pair of gloves, and they were the warmest pair I ever had. It's put to good use, you see.

Some cultural things you may not have known:
Bullet; Red The Inuit are famous for their carving. If you search "Inuit carving" you will see how smooth everything is. Today tourists buy them as great souvenirs. Here is a video.
Bullet; Red Angakoks
(Shamans, and yes I had to look up how to spell that,) were kind of like religious leaders. They could communicate with the spirit world by dancing. When things went wrong, it meant the spirits were unhappy. I know there were lots of spirits, but the ones I know are Nanuq and Sedna.
Bullet; Red Inukshuks are famous, but what people don't know is that they're not just decoration. They're used as a form of communicating direction.

Here is a great site about first contact with the Europeans.

And if there is anything I did not talk about, you will probably find it here, in this book. "The Inuit Way: A Guide to Inuit Culture." It is a very interesting read. :) (Smile) This is an online copy.

- The Inuits had a lot of beliefs and strongly believed in animism; all living and non-living things had a spirit. That included people, animals, inanimate objects, and forces of nature. Which in fact they named there children after dead relatives.
- Now sides to the Polar Bear being a very important figure in inuit myth even Greenland having it as a national animal for that reason; there were other animals that were treated quite importantly like the Raven who was believe to have created the world but also sometimes portray as a trickster but defiantly had the good endings.  The Narwhal also had a story too which was about a cruel women that got tricked by her son. Most Animals that live in the Arctic play a pretty important part in the Inuit stories.
- Huskies were use as a mode of transportation of the harsh cold climates which people may have consider it animal abuse but the dogs were very strong and were working dogs they were meant to pull sleds. Today they have competitions and races, especially during the arctic winter games.
Inuit drumming were mostly done by men but sometimes women did it as well which you can see them as festivals ( Here's a video to show a example ) Now while men did this, women also did Throat Singing which was a way to entertain themselves while the men were gone hunting. ( Here's a video for this as well )
- Now Inuit communities and families were very important and close, surviving the cold and harsh climates was no easy task. Most of the time men did the hunting and women stay at home to take care of children, making food, clothes and at times Inuit women had quite a lot of responsibilities which both men and women were treated pretty equally and needed each other. Now this doesn't mean women didn't hunt or men didn't know how the sew, they sometimes switch work was pretty equal among those 2.
- Inuits had a lot of importance to family everyone as say had there part and had to do the work.
Inuit also did tattoos thought most of them were done by elder women due to there practice of making clothes.
- Native North American tribes, and the Inuit of what is now Canada, used lip piercings and wore bone jewellery, which has now been reinvented as the labret stud. They also used ear piercing as a status symbol, where even the act of piercing the ear was a celebrated ritual that was undertaken at great cost to the piercee; so showing how wealthy the piercee was.
- Now Ulu's were a very important tool use for skinning animals and game that was caught.

Quite more on the Inuit culture.
Kuniks or Nose Rubbing which people have known the Inuits for.
