=> Kanata (Canada)

In 1535, two Indian Youths told Jacques Cartier about the route to "kanata". They were referring to the village of Stadacona; "kanata" was simply the Huron-Iroquois word for "village" or "settlement." But for want of another name, Cartier used "Canada" to refer not only to Stadacona (the site of present day Quebec City), but also to the entire area subject to its chief, Donnacona. The name was soon applied to a much larger area: maps in 1547 designated everything north of the St. Lawrence River as "Canada."

Oh Kanata! Our Home on Native Land

Video : www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0Hz0O…

The Canadian National Anthem does not truly reflect this land, we created a new rendition of the song that gives acknowledgement to the fact that this country was founded on Indigenous traditional territories. In order to move forward, Canadians (whether Indigenous or Non-Indigenous) must acknowledge what has occurred in our history, and find positive ways of moving forward. As Non-Indigenous Canadians, we need to play our role as allies - and that first step begins with acknowledging what this country was originally founded upon.

=> The Métis
  • The Métis people helped to shape the Canada of today, mainly in terms of the expansion of the west.
  • The first Métis people were born in Eastern Canada as early as the 1600s. They were the children born to European fishermen and their Native wives.
  • However, it was the Red River region, in present day Manitoba, where the Métis Nation was really first established
  • The Métis people had a distinct way of life that incorporated aspects of both French-Canadian and Native cultures. This could explain why they were called the 'Métis', which came from the French word for 'mixed'.

=> The Ottawa

Ottawa comes from the Algonquin word "Adawe" meaning "to trade" and originates from their role as traders even before contact. Variations are: Atawawa, Odawa, Outaouacs, Outaoua, Tawa, Tawaw, and Utawawea. The Ottawa became so important in the French fur trade, that before 1670, it was common practice in Quebec to call any Algonquin from the Great Lakes an Ottawa. In their own language, the Ottawa (like the Ojibwe) refer to themselves as Anishinabe (Neshnabek) meaning "people." Other names for the Ottawa were: Andatahourat or Ondatawnwat (Huron), Dewagunha (Mohawk), Udawak (Penobscot), Ukuayata (Huron), Waganhae or Waganis (Iroquois), Watawawininiwok (Ojibwe), and Wdowo (Abnaki). Canada currently has more than 4,000 Ottawa, mostly with the Ontario First Nations on Cockburn, Manitoulin, and Walpole Islands.

=> The Inuit

The people of the Canadian Arctic are known as the Inuit, which means 'the people', or singularly, Inuk, which means 'the person'. The Inuit were the last native people to arrive in North America. All the good land to the south was already occupied by hostile Indians so they settled in the Arctic. Nobody else wanted it because it was one of the most extreme climates in the world. But the Inuit were masters at adapting to sustain their people over thousands of years. The Inuktitut and Yupik languages are both quite hard to learn and speak, because they are very complex languages.
The Inuit have a distinct culture and appearance from other First Peoples groups in Canada, which really set them apart. Historically, the Canadian Inuit were divided into eight main groups: Labrador Inuit, Ungava or New Quebec Inuit, Baffin Island, Igloolik, Caribou, Netsilik, Copper and Western Arctic Inuit.
