=> Canada's First Peoples

The Northwest Coast people have the most diverse languages of any First Peoples group in Canada. It is estimated that there are nineteen distinct languages spoken by the people. The main groups are the Haida, the Tlingit, the Tsimshian, the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka), and the Salishan.

The Plateau peoples lived in a small region that included the southern interior of British Columbia and Alberta. Historically, the Plateau people of Canada were divided into three main groups: the Athapascan, Interior Salish, and Ktunaxa. These three groups could then be further divided into the eight main Plateau groups: the Tsilhqot'in (formerly the Chilcotin), the Carrier, the Nicola, Secwepemc (formerly the Shuswap), the Stl'atl'imx (formerly the Lillooet), the Okanagan, the Nlaka'pamux (formerly the Thompson), and the Ktunaxa (formerly the Kutenai or Kootenay).

From the Rocky Mountains to the woodlands of Southeastern Manitoba, the native people of the plains spanned the Southern provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. They have been there at least 10,000 years. The main groups are Blackfoot Confederacy, Plains Cree, Plains Ojibwa (the Saulteaux), Sioux (Stoney and Assiniboine).

Ancestors of the Eastern Woodlands people of Canada first arrived in the region 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age. The main groups are Ojibwa, Ottawa, Nipissing, Algonquin (not to be mistaken from Algonquian), Maliseet and Mi'kmaq.

The Eastern Woodland Farmers came to the area around Lake Ontario over 12,000 years ago. They inhabited the shores of the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence River, and up towards Georgian Bay, in Southwestern and South-Central Ontario. The main groups are the Huron, the Neutral, the Petun and the Iroquois.

The Subarctic people occupied a majority of Canada from the Yukon to Newfoundland, including parts of seven provinces and two territories. The main groups are Gwich'in, Han and Tutchone in the Yukon; the Tagish, Tahltan, Kaska, Sekani and Dene (Yellowknife, Dogrib, Hare, Mountain, Slavey, Chipewyan, Beaver, Sarcee) in the northwest; the Tsetsaut; the Inland Tlingit; the Cree, Ojibwa, Saulteaux, Attikamek and Innu in the East.

The people of the Canadian Arctic are known as the Inuit. They used to be called Eskimos, which came from a Native American word for 'eater of raw meat'. Now the Arctic people are officially known as the Inuit, which means 'the people', or singularly, Inuk, which means 'the person'.
